Ready. A seven-teen year old Eko draws in a long, steady, breath.

Set. She lifts onto the balls of her feet, weight balanced into her hips, feet nestled on the start block.

Go. She launches forward and speeds down the rubbery track. She rounds the bend, lungs and legs on fire and feet both heavy and light as they beat down the track. There’s freedom in the speed, like she’s flying so fast that nothing can catch her.

Years of training all for a moment where everything else falls away, even the other racers. All that matters is her and the track under her feet. The sight of the finish line reminds her to push harder and her steady pace hastens. Run. Run. Run. And then it’s over. She crosses the line and the world comes flooding back and the loudspeakers ring in her ears. “Oh what a race, ladies and gentlemen! Jordan Davis, First place. Lisa Jones, Second place. And Eko Darling, a very close third!”

The call to protect Johto from team rocket’s invasion seems like it came so suddenly but everyone knows what’s going on in Kanto. It was as if everyone were living in a bubble - suspended in the belief that Kanto’s invasion didn’t have implications for their own country. But, now, the leaders call on the youth of the country to enlist and serve their people.

Eko, although one of only a few from her small town, leaves behind college and her track scholarships and joins the ranks. Her assignments largely center around transportation but as her comrades fall at the border and Kanto is overrun, civilian escort and rescue missions become more common.

A twenty year old Eko clutches to Flowers’s feathers as the two whip through the air just above the treetops. Her breath catches as she spots one of the women her platoon had been escorting to the Kanto border. An explosion sprays dirt into the air and she loses sight of the woman. As if in tune with Eko’s very thoughts, Flowers rears back and sends a blast of wind to clear the dirt before darting down into the tree line.

She can hear her platoon leader calling out over the screams of civilians and fellow soldiers: “Move!” Civilians rush through the trees, “Move!”, Soldiers plant themselves between the civilians and the oncoming force, “Move!”, Team Rocket’s attack continues. Eko’s heart beats into her ears as she and her partner wedge themselves between the woman and the enemy. ”Air Slash!”

Johto repels Team Rocket. The chaos of war dwindles down to a trickle. There’s a squirmish or two at the Kanto border but a quiet acceptance of Team Rocket’s occupation in Kanto. The soldiers are sent home and left to figure out how to exist in normality.

Homelife is too quiet and what Eko thinks is an itch to run, or fly, or escape everything the way she did on the highschool track team, turns out to be an itch to continue. The occupation is firm in Kanto and there’s no saving it without government movement. Johto’s leaders are satisfied with just maintaining the border’s safety but she hears whispers of Team Rocket making moves in Hoenn. So Eko leverages her service, and highschool marks and extracurriculars to apply to university in Hoenn.

Her family’s baffled. But, life’s too short or something like that, so she’s going to do what she wants.
